About Deborah Marrow

In September 2018, the Getty Board of Trustees announced the renaming of the Getty Foundation's undergraduate internship program in honor of Deborah Marrow. The new name is now the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship program. Marrow retired as director of the Getty Foundation in 2018 and passed away in 2019 (see press release).
Under Marrow's leadership the Foundation awarded 8,000 grants in over 180 countries. Throughout her career, she was active in professional organizations in the fields of art history, museums, preservation, and philanthropy. Starting with her student days, Marrow remained dedicated to diversifying the staffs of art museums and related organizations throughout her career.
Marrow held a Ph.D. and a B.A. cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania, and M.A. from the Johns Hopkins University. She also twice served as the interim CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust and once as interim director of the Getty Research Institute. Marrow oversaw other key local and international grant initiatives including Pacific Standard Time, Keeping It Modern, the Online Scholarly Catalogue Initiative (OSCI), and the Panel Paintings Initiative.
