Bulla Regia Mosaic Conservation Project is a summary report of the model field project that took place between 2010 and 2017 at the archaeological site of Bulla Regia in northwest Tunisia as part of the MOSAIKON Initiative. It presents the conservation methodology and results of the project's two components.

The first component was a conservation and maintenance plan for the nearly 400 mosaics excavated throughout the site. An important element of the planning process was the development and use of a rapid survey form to program and prioritize the conservation treatment of all the mosaics. Together with the creation of a new site plan and a geographic information system (GIS) and geodatabase to accurately locate and visualize the mosaic survey data, it was possible to produce thematic maps of the mosaics which were a significant tool for production of the multiyear conservation and maintenance plan.

The second component was the conservation treatment and presentation strategy for an entire building at the site, Maison de la Chasse, and the conservation treatment and reburial of a building not intended for presentation, Maison 4. The majority of the conservation work on these two buildings was carried out by trained Institut National du Patrimoine of Tunisia (INP) technicians using local lime-based materials for mortars. The technicians worked under the supervision of Getty Conservation Institute instructors and project consultants during spring and fall campaigns and independently during the rest of the year to insure the sustainability of future work.

The conservation and maintenance plan for the excavated mosaics was accomplished. However, owing to security challenges in the region, parts of the second component, most notably the protection and presentation interventions of the Maison de la Chasse, were not begun, although conservation treatments in this building were almost entirely completed. This project report as well as the conservation work implemented on site will hopefully provide an example of conservation practice and a methodology of conservation planning of value to conservation practitioners and site managers at locations with significant numbers of excavated mosaics throughout Tunisia and in other countries in the southern and eastern Mediterranean region.

About Bulla Regia Model Conservation Project
Bulla Regia Model Conservation Project was a collaboration of the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI), the Institut National du Patrimoine of Tunisia (INP), and the World Monuments Fund that built upon more than ten years of previous collaboration between the GCI and INP. in the training of mosaic conservation technicians and site directors throughout Tunisia in the conservation of in situ mosaics and the management of archaeological sites. The project provided the opportunity to build and to demonstrate the conservation skills of the recently trained technicians employed at the site and to provide an example of best practices for other sites in the country and throughout the Mediterranean region that have significant collections of in situ mosaics.

About MOSAIKON
The MOSAIKON initiative was a partnership of the Getty Conservation Institute, the Getty Foundation, the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property in Rome (ICCROM), and the International Committee for the Conservation of Mosaics (ICCM). MOSAIKON aimed to build knowledge and skills, develop replicable models of conservation best practice, strengthen professional networks, and promote the sharing of information on the care of mosaics, both at archaeological sites and in museums and storage throughout the Mediterranean region.
