Conservation Planning

Conservation planning has involved the topographic survey of the Bulla Regia archaeological site, the metric survey of buildings with mosaics, and the creation of a GIS database for use as a site management tool.

The mosaic conservation project team has focused its activities on the survey of excavated mosaics at the site, using a form developed for the site to assess and quantify the condition, significance, and risk of each mosaic. These survey results will help establish priorities and methods for conservation and maintenance of these mosaics within the management context of the site.

The mosaic conservation plan will provide a long-term program for future Institut National du Patrimoine technician-led remedial and protective interventions at the site, including reburial, and a planning model for other sites with mosaics both in Tunisia and throughout the MOSAIKON region.
