MALE NARRATOR: “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street. Fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what’s happening.” – Coco Chanel

MALE NARRATOR: Welcome to Icons of Style: A Century of Fashion Photography, 1911-2011. We invite you to take a journey through one hundred years of fashion photographs, accompanied by a selection of costumes, illustrations, magazine covers, advertisements, and videos. While their connective thread is fashion, they each present a unique lens through which we can explore the world. A photograph can not only capture the style of an era, but also the changing political, social, and economic ideologies of the time. A garment possesses both the ability to clothe and the power to change how a person feels. A magazine cover showcases not just a model, but the ever-changing notions of style and beauty. The people who crafted the art in this exhibition were movers, shakers, innovators, and rule-breakers, who left their mark on the world, and their work continues to influence our definitions of style.
