Lectures

The Getty Villa Reimagined
Jorge Silvetti, a principal of Machado and Silvetti Associates, Boston, architects of the new Getty Villa, will talk about the design process that led to the radical transformation of the Malibu canyon site and to the creation of facilities for public, scholarly, and educational programs.

Silvetti will discuss in detail the changes and enhancements to the original buildings and reveal the ideas that generated the architecture of the new structures, including a personal account of the many years of work that helped create this new vision for the Getty Villa.

Thursday, April 6, 2006
Getty Villa, Auditorium

Reservations available beginning February 23, 2006.

Inside Out, Outside In: Landscape, Architecture and the Getty Villa
Wim de Wit, head of Special Collections and Visual Resources at the Getty Research Institute and co-curator of the exhibition, discusses the role of the natural landscape in Machado and Silvetti's renovation of the Getty Villa.

De Wit will explore various features of Machado and Silvetti's redesign—such as the visitor entry sequence, the creation of windows and skylights in the Museum, and the construction of the outdoor theater—that helped link interior and exterior spaces and redefined the Getty Villa's relationship to the Malibu canyon site.
