After Raphael's death, Perino del Vaga
established himself as a specialist in fresco. His self-assuredness
with large-scale wall paintings is revealed in Saint Mark and
Saint John with Putti, for a chapel in the church of San Marcello
al Corso in Rome. The use of red chalk, the confident line, and
the extreme balance in composition are reminiscent of Raphael, yet
the distorted proportions and mannered stance of the characters
are distinctly Perino's.
