Many of Manet's figures are actively engaged in looking at each other, at themselves, or at something beyond the picture frame—including the viewer. John House, Walter H. Annenberg Professor at the Courtauld Institute of Art, explores these devices as expressions of Manet's notion of modernity.

The Seductive Art of Painting: Reflections on Manet
Join Zhenya Gershman, Museum educator, and Scott Allan, assistant curator, Department of Paintings, the J. Paul Getty Museum, in an exploration of paintings by Édouard Manet. Focusing on A Bar at the Folies-Bergère, this two-part course considers the social context and pictorial complexity of Manet's art as well as his place in art hisotry.
Course fee $30; $20 students. Open to 40 participants.
