grotesque

A kind of ornament discovered by Renaissance artists in ancient Roman houses. Grotesque designs include fantastic human and animal figures and plant forms, candelabra forms, and inventively employed classical motifs. Grotesques were common in Renaissance, Mannerist, and Neoclassical decorative arts.
