Object Description

While in Berlin studying to be a professional photographer at the Lette-Haus, a technical training school for women, Marianne Breslauer made this Surrealist photograph. During a visit by her friend the photographer Paul Citroen, she discovered the chance composition formed by his reflection in her dressing table mirror and asked her sister to extend her hand into the picture. The resulting image has an air of mystery about it, so much so that Breslauer considered submitting the photograph as an illustration for the detective novels of British author Edgar Wallace, whose thrillers were popular at the time.
