Medici Porcelain Manufactory (Italian porcelain factory, active ca. 1575-1587)
|
Note: Under the patronage of Grand Duke Francesco I de' Medici, the factory continually experimented with producing pieces like that from China, developing an "artificial" or soft-paste porcelain. The pieces were thicker than true hard-paste porcelain from Asia and were covered with a cloudy, bubbled glaze. The pieces produced were drawn from a variety of styles including contemporary Turkish pottery, Italian maiolica, and Chinese porcelain. The majority of these pieces bare the mark of the dome of the cathedral of Florence above the letter "F." The factory was open for 12 years, but only sixty-four pieces exist today. |
