Lindauer, Gottfried (Bohemian painter, 1839-1926)
|
Note: Portrait painter and native of Bohemia studied at the Vienna Academy, but is known for his portraits of the Maori people. He arrived in New Zealand in 1873 after evading the Austro-Hungarian army conscript, and soon had patrons among Maori notables. He painted members of tribes both friendly to colonization, and rebels. Lindauer generally portrayed his Maori patrons dressed in European (Pakeha) style, but occasionally introduced elements of the indigenous society. A collection formed by Aukland businessman Henry Partridge grew to contain 62 portraits and eight genre scenes showing pre-European life, including activities such as weaving and facial tattooing. Because missionaries banned tattoing in the 1860s, these works came to serve an important documentary purpose. |
