Yang Gihun (Korean painter and court artist, 1843-unknown)
|
Note: A painter active at the end of the Joseon period, Yang Gihun served as a court painter at the Royal Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo). In 1883, he accompanied a government delegation to the United States and created genre paintings there. In 1908, he spent a year and a half in Japan. He left behind many works, including paintings on the theme of bird-and-flowers, landscapes, and fish. Among the many subjects that he worked with, Yang is recognized as a master of painting geese. Along with Jang Seungeop (1843-1897), he is remembered for creating a new style for paintings of reeds and wild geese in the late Joseon Dynasty. His son Yang Yeongjin (late 19th century-first half of the 20th century) was renowned for his ink paintings of cranes. |
