Váchal, Josef (Czech painter, printmaker, and sculptor, 1884-1969)

Note: Painter and printmaker who worked in an expressionist style, and was inspired by theosophy and mysticism. He studied bookbinding in Prague in his early teens, which informed his work throughout his life. He created books with a hand press using his own hand-carved type and embellished with woodcut illustrations. Impressed by the work of Gauguin, he began after 1906 to create primitivist scupture and objects. Váchal co-founded the Sursum group in 1910, and was one of its principal protagonists in the late Secessionist period. Largely self-taught, he followed no school or trend, but developed his own visual vocabulary resembling folk art. Known for the "Portmoneum:" a work created on the walls of a patron's house in Litomysl, Moravia, in the early 1920s.
