Byeon Gwansik (Korean painter and educator, 1899-1976)
|
Note: Byeon Gwansik was a painter active in the modern and contemporary eras. He learned painting from his maternal grandfather Jo Seokjin (1853-1920) and also from Komuro Suiun (1874-1945), a master of Japanese Nanga. He joined the Calligraphy and Painting Association (Seohwa hyeophoe) in 1921, and established the group Dongyeonsa in the following year. Byeon began submitting his works to the Joseon Art Exhibition (Joseon misul jeollamhoe) in 1922. From 1949 through 1957, he served as a judge for the National Art Exhibition (Gukjeon). He spent the rest of his life fostering students and working outside the mainstream art community. The characteristics of his landscape paintings include the depiction of real scenery instead of conceptual landscapes and the use of a technique of piling up brushstrokes in successive layers by varying the ink tones. |
