Osborne House Painter (Greek vase painter, active ca. 550-ca. 525 BCE)
|
Note: The Osborne House Painter worked on the Greek island of Samos from around 550 to 525 BCE. Four surviving vases have been identified as his work: three cups and a kantharos in the form of a human face. The Osborne House Painter often integrated a range of foreign elements into his work, blending forms and motifs from Athenian and Laconian pottery with his native Samian style. Characteristic of the painter's style is the use of ivy on the exterior of the lip of the cup, a detail inspired by Athenian Siana cups, combined with a frieze on the interior of the lip. As with most ancient artists, the true name of the Osborne House Painter is unknown; he is identified only by the stylistic traits of his work. He takes his name from a vase now in Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, once a favorite residence of Queen Victoria. |
