Yi Jeong (Korean painter, 1578-1607)
|
Note: Yi Jeong was a painter active during the mid-Joseon Dynasty. His father, Yi Seunghyo (active sixteenth century), and uncle, Yi Heunghyo (1537-1593), were both court painters. After losing his parents at a young age, Yi Jeong was raised by his uncle, Yi Heunghyo. It is said that he already excelled at painting landscapes, figures, and Buddhist themes by the age of ten. He utilized a variety of styles in his landscapes, including the classical An Gyeon School, the Zhe School (which was widespread at the time), and the newly introduced Southern School of Painting. He was an enterprising painter who practiced traditional painting styles while simultaneously adopting new styles. |
