Note: In 1902, Englebert-Marie, 9th Duke of Arenberg sold 40,000 individual prints from his vast collection, which remained in the Brussels family palace until 1914. The prints represented all periods and schools, included editions of van Dyck’s Iconography and works by Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt, Jacques Callot and Lucas van Leyden, the ‘cabinet of the king’ (a collection of prints produced by order of Louis XIV), portraits of the Arenberg family and printed books of hours. The Duke’s primary residence was in Brussels, but in 1904 he purchased the Schloss Nordkirchen, ‘the Versailles of Westphalia’, which housed the library of the Plettenberg family.
