Guardi family (Italian painters, active 18th century)
|
Note: Italian family of painters and draftsmen, generally considered Venetian, and dating at least as far back as the early 16th century, in the Val di Sole region of the Trentino. They were of some distinction and were granted a patent of nobility by Emperor Ferdinand III in 1643. Domenico Guardi (1678-1716), learned to paint in Vienna, was married there before the turn of the century, and was the father of the two best known members of the family, painters Giovanni Antonio Guardi (1699-1760) and Francesco Guardi (1712-1793). A third son, Nicolò Guardi (1715-1786) also became a painter, and attributions to Nicolò are mostly speculation. Daughter Celilia was born in Venice in 1702 and married Giambattista Tiepolo in 1719. On the death of Francesco, the studio was inherited by his son Giacomo Guardi (1764-1835). |
