Martinez family (Native American potters, active 19th-20th centuries)
|
Note: Operating exclusively in the San Ildefonso Pueblo, the collaborative husband and wife team of Julian and Maria Martinez created pottery that directly replicated, and also expanded upon, ancient Native American designs. Maria operated exclusively as the potter, while Julian was the painter. In 1919-1920, the couple developed a black-on-black pottery style (though they frequently worked in polychrome) that eventually became the most common pottery made in San Ildefonso, as well as nearby pueblos. Maria was also the first Pueblo potter to sign her work. |
