Gakchong (Korean painter and monk, active mid-18th century)
|
Note: Gakchong was a monk-painter active in the Gyeonggi-do region in the mid-eighteenth century. He served as the head monk-painter for the production of "Vairocana Buddha Triad Gwaebul" for Bongseonsa (temple) in Namyangju in 1735 and "Three Bodhisattvas" in the Geungnakbojeon (hall) at Silleuksa in Yeoju in 1758. Both paintings were commissioned by the Joseon royal family. They are marked by graceful brushwork and compositions as well as skillfully applied perspective. His mastery of painting suggests that he may have been a leading monk-painter in Gyeonggi-do region in the eighteenth century. His painting style impacted a monk-painter Gwanheodang Seolhun. |
