Kastner, Frédéric (Alsatian musician, scientist, and inventor, 1852-1882)

Note: Inventor of the pyrophone, or flame-organ, which Kastner patented in 1873. Variations of this instrument included an electric singing chandelier lustre, and an electric singing candelabra. He was the son of the Alsatian composer Georges Kastner and led a short life, dying at age 30. After the war of 1870-1871 he devoted himself to studying the properties of musical flames. The strange tones produced by his instrument attracted the notice of musicians such as Charles Gounod who considered using the Pyrophone in his opera “Jeanne d'Arc.” The instrument was avidly promoted by Henry Dunant, founder of the Red Cross, but failed to become commonly used, almost immediately lapsing into obscurity. |
