Osceola Nickanochee (Seminole leader, ca. 1804-1838 )
|
Note: Born in Georgia, the son of an English trader (probably William Powell) and a Seminole woman. He became a leader of a small band of Seminole in Florida during the Second Seminole War when the United States tried to remove the Seminoles from their lands. He was an advisor to Micanopy, the highest-ranking chief of the Seminoles. U.S. forces seized Osceola under a flag of truce and imprisoned him in Fort Moultrie, South Carolina, where he died. |
