Record Type: Person
Medici, Cosimo de' (Florentine statesman, banker, 1389-1464)

Note: Cosimo was the son of Giovanni di Averardo (di Bicci) de' Medici. He was a humanist and the greatest private patron of art and architecture of his time; he introduced a new conception of patronage in which he exploited the propaganda value of architecture and sculpture. Cosimo increased his father's trading and banking business and became one of the wealthiest men of his time. The Albizzi, one of the other leading families, attempted a coup, forcing Cosimo into exile; but returned in triumph in 1434, and the Medici principate began. Cosimo has been traditionally blamed for destroying Florentine liberties, however these ancient liberties had always been more of an illusion than a reality, and they had ceased to exist in the under the Albizzi. While wielding nearly absolute power, Cosimo successfully retained the appearance of a constitutional system.
