Oh Gwisuk (Korean painter and courtesan, active first half of 20th century)
|
Note: Oh Gwisuk was a painter who worked as a female entertainer (gisaeng) in the early modern era. She studied calligraphy and painting for a year from Kim Eungwon (1855-1921) and Kim Gyujin (1864-1933), both masters of ink orchids. Starting around 1923, she studied the bamboo painting manual of Min Yeongik (sobriquet: Unmi, 1860-1914) under Kim Yongjin (1878-1968). She often painted ink orchids in the Unmi style. She was the most prolific female painter in the calligraphy and painting community of the 1920s as measured by entries to the Joseon Art Exhibition (Joseon misul jeollamhoe). |
