Unidentified Named People and Firms (ULAN facet)
|
Note: End users should typically avoid linking to records in this facet. Records in this hierarchical division represent the following: Information for people and corporate bodies related directly or indirectly to art or architecture, where a name or partial name of the person or corporate body is known, but the full identity is unknown. If a full name, nationality, life dates, or life roles are unknown, the record for a person or corporate body may be placed here. Examples include, but are not limited to, people named in inventories or other original archival documents, people depicted in portraits or other works, and people and firms associated with archival records, such as names in a finding aid. Not included in this hierarchical division are "anonymous" artists, who are artistic personalities identified through their oeuvre, locus of activity, and dates of activity, but for whom the name is unknown; such anonymous masters are included in the ULAN “Persons, Artists” hierarchical subdivision. Note that “Unidentified Named People” may be flagged as for "local use" at the name or at the record level. Due to the ambiguous nature of this information, data for “local use” should be omitted when ULAN is used for indexing or incorporated in a broad retrieval application. On the other hand, “Unidentified Named People” may be further researched and their biographies completed at a later date, when the records will be merged with another existing ULAN record or moved to another appropriate hierarchical division in ULAN. |
