Record Type: Person
Satie, Erik (French composer, 1866-1925)

Note: Satie was an unconventional musician whose compositions proved influential in the development of 20th century music, and Modernism itself. He collaborated on a ballet, 'Parade,' performed by the Ballet Russes in Paris, 1917, that included sets and costumes by Picasso and a scenario by Jean Cocteau. He anticipated the development of ambient music by composing works that were meant to be listened to passively, what he called "furniture" music. At the same time, his 'Trois Gymnop00edies' used unique chord structures that positioned him as a pioneer of harmony, and an influence on the development of Neoclassicism. The manuscript for his "Vexations" noted that its motif should be repeated 842 times. It was not performed until 1963, when John Cage and a team of pianists completed it over the course of 18 hours. His compositions often included graphical elements, unusual titles, and instructions.
