Yi Haeung (Korean painter and calligrapher, 1820-1898)
|
Note: A member of the Joseon royal family, Yi Haeung was a painter, calligrapher, and statesman active at the end of Joseon period. He excelled at painting and calligraphy and was particularly skilled in executing clerical script and ink orchids. He pioneered a distinctive style of composition and brushwork, establishing a uniquely Korean style of ink orchid painting. His ink orchid paintings were widely renowned even during his lifetime and became established as a style known as "Seokparan" (combining Yi's sobriquet Seokpa with "ran", meaning orchid). The Seokparan style had many followers even after Yi's death, and it remained popular throughout the late Joseon, Korean Empire, and Japanese colonial era. |
