Thomsen, Christian Jürgensen (Danish archaeologist and curator, 1788-1865)
|
Note: Thomsen is noted for developing the three-part division of prehistory, naming the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages for the successive stages of man's technological development in Europe. This tripartite scheme has formed the basis for other chronological systems developed by later generations of archaeologists. During his long tenure as curator at the National Museum of Denmark, Thomsen developed a nomenclature for classifying and arranging Scandinavian antiquities. |
