Wagner, Veit (German sculptor, died 1516-1520)
|
Note: The large quantities of wood and stone sculptures that were produced suggest that Veit ran a large workshop. Little of Wagner's documented work survives although some surviving sculpture has been attributed to him. Wagner's style can be seen in the unpainted limewood reliefs of SS Peter and Maternus from the high altar of Saint-Pierre-le-Vieux, Strasbourg. He combined aspects of the Late Gothic tradition in landscape, drapery, pose, and gesture with the new demands of the early 16th century; his figures feature individualized heads and introspective expressions. He was probably responsible for some of the 14th-century statuettes in the choir at Strausbourg Cathedral; the monumental Mount of Olives of 1498, which stands in the north arm of the transept, is also attributed to Wagner. |
