Cockerill, John Albert (American journalist and editor, 1845-1896)

Note: St. Louis Post-Dispatch Journalist involved in a feud and then ensuing murder of Alonzo Slayback, a partner in the Law firm Broadhead, Slayback & Haeussler. In his trial, he was defended by famed lawyer Charles P. Johnson. The jury found the death as as was a "justifiable homicide committed in self-defense." As a result, Cockerill left St. Louis under a dark cloud, but later resumed his newspaper career at the New York World as the editor & later at the New York Herald.
