Celestine III, Pope (Italian pope, ca. 1105-1198)
|
Note: He was Peter Abelard's student and friend. He carried out many important legations in Germany, Spain, and Portugal; St. Thomas Becket considered him his most reliable friend at the Roman Curia. He had been cardinal deacon of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Italy, for 47 years when, on March 30, 1191, at the age of 85, he was elected as the first member of the Roman Orsini family to become pope. On the eve of his consecration he was ordained priest (April 13), and the day after his consecration he crowned King Henry VI of Germany as Holy Roman emperor. |
