Nicholas V, Pope (Italian pope, 1397-1455)
|
Note: Born in the Republic of Genoa; his father was a physician. He studied theology in Bologna and Florence, had ties to the Strozzi and Albizzi families, and met the leading humanist scholars. As pope, he brought to an end the schism caused by rivalries between popes and councils, restored peace to the Papal States and the rest of Italy, and was a great patron of artists, scholars, and a large building campaign in Rome. Founder of the Vatican Library. |
