Mylne, Robert, I (Scottish architect, 1633-1710)

Note: Robert succeeded his uncle John Mylne III as Master Mason to the king of Scotland in 1668. He is noted for his high-density courtyard developments such as Mylne's Court (1690), Lawnmarket, and Milne's Square, High Street, Edinburgh. He is also noted for his work with William Bruce on the new palace of Holyrood House from 1671; Robert again worked with Bruce for the Duke of Lauderdale at Thirlestane (ca. 1670-1680), Lauder, and Ham House (ca. 1682), Surrey. Other projects include repair of Edinburgh Castle (1662-1685); working with his uncle on Leslie Palace (ca. 1667-1678), Fife; a new Mercat Cross in Perth (1688); an extension of Wemyss Castle (1669-1672), Fife; and the design for the Trotter tombstone (1709) in Greyfriars' churchyard, Edinburgh.
