Note: Born in Nairobi, Kenya to British parents, September 27, 1931. Fletcher moved to West London when 5 years old after his father's sudden death. He later studied at the Royal College of Art, London, then graduate design school at Yale University in the United States from 1956, where he studied with Paul Rand, Herbert Matter, and Josef Albers. He worked with the motion picture title designer Saul Bass in Los Angeles before returning to London in 1959. In 1960 he formed the design firm Fletcher/Forbes/Gill, which became Pentagram in 1972. He authored several books on aspects of design, and was consultant art director for Phaidon's Art and Ideas series.
