Musafar, Fakir (American body modification artist, photographer, and teacher, 1930-2018)

Note: Performance artist and photographer noted for the body-modifications that he self-photographed and published in his magazine, "Body Play." He practiced spiritual elevation through shamanic rituals and meditations including body suspension through hooks embedded in his flesh. Sources cite his birth name as either Roland or Ronald, his New York Times obituary uses both without noting the change. He was known in public exclusively as Fakir Musafar, a name he adopted officially in 1977 at the first International Tattoo Convention in Reno, Nevada. |
