James, Daniel Willis (American merchant and philanthropist, born 1832, in England)
|
Note: American metal merchant and philanthropist; he was born in Liverpool, England, where his father Daniel James was a prominent merchant. In 1847, he moved to New York City and became affiliated with the manufacturer and importation of metals. At the time of his death he was the senior member of the firm of Phelps, Dodge, & Co. of 99 John Street. As a philanthropist, he was President of the Children's Aid Society and a member and benefactor of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He died of heart disease at the Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. |
