Yi Nyeong (Korean painter and court artist, active 11th to 12th century)
|
Note: Yi Nyeong served as a court painter during the Goryeo Dynasty. He went to China as a court painter accompanying an envoy to the Northern Song Dynasty in 1124. While there, he created the painting "Yeseonggang (river)" at the request of Emperor Huizong (r. 1100-1125), was highly acclaimed for it, and taught painting to leading Chinese court painters. The records of Yi Nyeong's paintings of the Yeseonggang and the South Gate at Cheonsusa (temple) indicate that professional court painters who created traditional real scenery landscape paintings (silgyeong sansuhwa) existed in the twelfth century. His son Yi Gwangpil (active 12th-13th century) was also a painter and was favored by King Myeongjong (r. 1170-1197). |
