Record Type: Corporate Body
Camden Town Group (British group of painters, formed 1911)

Note: A group of British painters formed in 1911; although it only lasted two years, its name is used in a broader sense to characterize a particular strain of British painting from about 1905 to 1920. It took its name from the working-class area of London painted often by Walter Sickert, the painter who was the prime inspiration for the group. The membership was limited to sixteen and women were excluded; Duncan Grant became a member after Lightfoot's suicide in 1911. The work of member artists varied considerably in their aims and styles and their subject matter went beyond urban scenes of Camden Town to include landscapes, portraits, and still lifes. Three exhibitions were held at the Carfax Gallery in London in 1911 and 1912; as they were financially disastrous, the gallery declined to host more exhibitions and the Camden Town Group merged with other small artists' groups to form the London Group in November 1913.
