Record Type: Person
Szeemann, Harald (Swiss curator, 1933-2005)

Note: Influential curator of the post-World War II era, Szeemann was an ardent advocate of modern and contemporary art, from Dada, surrealism, and futurism, to conceptualism, postminimalism, performance art, and new forms of installation and video art. Szeeman gained prominence as the head of the Kunsthalle Bern, and for being in charge of exhibitions at the Städtische Galerie Biel in the 1960s. Among his man exhibitions, Szeeman organized documenta 5 in 1972, the Venice Biennale in 1980, 1999, and 2001, and had a near-twenty-year association with the Kunsthaus Zürich.
