Yi Yongu (Korean painter and calligrapher, 1902-1952)
|
Note: Yi Yongu was a calligrapher and painter active in the modern and contemporary eras. From 1911, when he was ten years old, through 1914, Yi was taught painting at the Calligraphy and Painting Society (Seohwa misulhoe). He excelled at landscape paintings and bird-and-flower paintings. His early landscape paintings faithfully followed the painting style of his teacher An Jungsik (1861-1919) in terms of their compositions, bump-like mountains, and numerous moss dots. Starting in 1923, Yi sought to lead the reform of landscape painting through a fusion of Eastern and Western arts and pursued a new painting style combining the Western and traditional elements. In the 1930s, his work showed a style embodying realistic aesthetics and incorporating the Japanese Southern painting style. His bird-and-flower paintings are marked by the use of traditional compositions and subjects and bold colors. |
