Record Type: Corporate Body
Nazarenes (German group of artists, active 1809-ca. 1830)

Note: Group of artists founded at the Vienna Academy, 1809, by Friedrich Overbeck. Originally called the Lukasbrüder, they were later derisively called the Nazarenes due to monk-like lifestyles. They reacted against neoclassicism and academic painting in general, and called for a return to the Medieval workshop, or guild form of education. In 1810 the group took up residence at the abandoned monastery of Isidoro outside Rome, where they hoped to revive the practice of monumental fresco painting. They emulated work of the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance, and of Dürer and Perugino in particular.
