Pumphrey, William (English daguerreotypist and photographer, 1817-1905)

Note: Born 4 February 1817; died 28 March 1905. Pumphrey was a teacher who took up daguerreotypy in 1849 and opened the "Photographic Portrait Gallery" in York, which was the first business in the city to be entirely devoted to photography. In 1852, Pumphrey took up the calotype process and started to photograph the streets and buildings of York. He sold his studio to George Brown (died 1862) in 1854 and left commercial photography to become the superintendent of a private asylum in York. Pumphrey continued to photograph as a hobby for the rest of his life and in 1895 moved to Bristol, Avon, England.
