Record Type: Person
Pinkas, Soběslav (Bohemian painter and caricaturist, 1827-1901)

Note: Student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in 1849, then at Munich the following year under Johann Berdellé (1813-1876). Travelled to France in 1854, where he remained until 1869. Thus he was the first Bohemian painter to absorb the influence of French artists who worked outside the Academy. He studied under Thomas Couture, and was later influenced by the Work of Courbet and Jean-François Millet. He is associated with the Barbizon school. While in France he lived in the villages of Marlotte and Cernay-la-Ville in the Forest of Fontainebleau. Upon returning to Prague in 1869, he seems to have produced works only for family and friends. Active from 1877 to 1885 as chair of the Department of Art in Artistic Forum, a Czech society of artists, literati, and musicians dedicated to forming a union of different fields into a national program. He also produced caricatures for the first political periodical printed in the Czech language.
