Penn University Archives & Records Center website, Penn People, viewed February 25, 2019 (Wilson Eyre, Jr.; born in Florence, Italy in 1858 to a Philadelphia family; did not return to live in the United States until he was 11 years old; attended M.I.T. but never earned an advanced degree in architecture; began his career in the Philadelphia office of James Peacock Simms in 1877; after Sims' death in 1882, Eyre took over the practice, worked independently until 1911 when he formed a partnership with John Gilbert McIlvaine; president of the Philadelphia chapter of the American Institute of Architects 1897-1902; best known for his residences, particularly those in the shingle style; founder and first editor of House and Garden magazine; taught at the School of Architecture, University of Pennsylvania, 1890-1894; award honorary Doctor of Fine Arts (D.F.A.) degree from there in 1926; one of the architects of the University Museum)
