Kuba, Ludvík (Czech painter, musician, and author, 1863-1956)
|
Note: First studied to be a musician, but entered the Prague Academy of Fine Arts in 1890, where he studied under Maximilián Pirner. In 1893 he moved to the Académie Julian in Paris where he studied until 1895. In Munich he worked under Anton Ažbe and became familiar with Slav folklore through contact with other students there. From 1904 through 1911 he lived in Vienna and was active among the Hagenbund association of artists. He preferred to paint the people and landscapes that surrounded him, and worked on a series of self-portraits throughout his life. While his association with Czech art was strong, he was also influenced by trends in late Impressionism, and the broader European art scene. His later life was spent in seclusion, collecting Slav folk-songs and ethnographica. |
