Formosus, Pope (Roman pope, ca. 816-896)
|
Note: His pontificate occurred during an era of strife for political supremacy in Italy, which succeeded the disruption of the Carlovingian empire. Formosus was probably born about 816, since, at his death, he is characterized by Vulgarius as an old man of eighty. His remains were exhumed and put on trial in the notorious Cadaver Synod.
