Frederick I, Holy Roman Emperor (Holy Roman emperor, 1122/1124,-1190)
|
Note: Son of Duke Frederick II of the Hohenstaufen dynasty and Judith, daughter of Henry IX, Duke of Bavaria, from the rival House of Welf. He married Adelheid of Vohburg Beatrice I, Countess of Burgundy. Before his imperial election, Frederick was by inheritance Duke of Swabia (1147-1152, as Frederick III). Known for his ambition, his skills at organization, his battlefield and political acumen, and his longevity. He reestablished of the Corpus Juris Civilis, or the Roman rule of law, which counter-balanced the papal power that had dominated the German states. |
