Steiger, Rudolf (Swiss architect, city planner, and furniture designer, 1900-1982)

Note: Rudolf Steiger studied architecture at the Eidgenössischen Technischen Hochschule (Zurich, Switzerland) from 1919 to 1923. He worked in the architectural office of A. Korn in Berlin, Germany, ca. 1923 and founded his own firm with his wife Flora Steiger-Crawford in Basel, Switzerland, in 1924. From 1929 to 1936 he was partner with Carl Hubacher in the architectural and engineering firm Hubacher and Steiger. The firm Hubacher and Steiger participated in the Werkbundsiedlung Neubühl (Zurich, Switzerland). Steiger worked on the site plan with Werner Max Moser, Hans Schmidt and Paul Artaria and designed the Typ A Reihenhauswohnung mit Dachterrasse (Type A row house with roof terrace) with Carl Hubacher, Emil Roth and Werner Max Moser from 1928 to 1929. In 1929 Steiger helped to establish the Genossenschaft Neubühl which in 1930 contracted the collective formed by Steiger himself, Paul Artaria, Max Ernst Haefeli, Carl Hubacher, Werner Max Moser, Emil Roth and Hans Schmidt to build the Werkbundsiedlung Neubühl. In 1931 Steiger, Max Ernst Haefeli, Carl Hubacher, Sigfried Giedion, Werner Max Moser, and Emil Roth were commissioned by the Schweizerischen Werkbund to decorate model houses and apartments (Wohnaustellung) at the Werkbundsiedlung Neubühl. He also designed furniture for the Typ N Etagenwohnung (Type N model apartment) and in 1933 he once again decorated the interiors at Werkbunsiedlung Neubühl. In 1937 Steiger established the firm HMS in Zurich, Switzerland, with Max Ernst Haefeli and Werner Max Moser. Swiss architect, Zurich.
