No Wonsang (Korean painter and calligrapher, 1871-1928)
|
Note: No Wonsang was a calligrapher and painter active at the end of the Joseon period and into the modern era. He studied calligraphy under Cha Heongyu (dates unknown), Yi Huisu (1836-1909), and Kim Gyujin (1864-1933). He worked as a teacher at the Giseong Calligraphy and Painting Society (Giseong Seohwa misulhoe) and at the Calligraphy and Painting Research Institute (Seohwa yeonguhoe). While living in Seoul, No learned to paint orchids and bamboo from Kim Gyujin. When the Calligraphy and Painting Research Institute expanded, he was placed in charge of its Pyeongyang branch. Together with his colleague Kim Yunbo (1865-1938), he submitted calligraphy several times to the exhibitions held by the institute. His ink orchid paintings followed in the "Soho Orchid" style of Kim Eungwon (1855-1921). His calligraphy can still be found on the hanging board at Eulmildae (pavilion) in Pyeongyang. |
