Almeida Júnior, José Ferraz de (Brazilian painter, 1850-1899)

Note: Entered at the Academia Imperial de Belas Artes - Aiba , in 1869, where he studied drawing with Jules Le Chevrel (c.1810 - 1872) and painting with Victor Meirelles (1832 - 1903). He completed his studies in 1874 but did not compete for the travel prize, returning to Itu, where he opened a studio in 1875 and worked as a portrait painter and drawing teacher. On a visit to the interior of the state of São Paulo, the Emperor Dom Pedro II (1825 - 1891) granted him a scholarship to Europe. He lived in Paris from 1876 to 1882, studying at the École National Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, where he was a pupil of Alexandre Cabanel (1823 - 1889). During his stay in the French capital, he took part in four Salons Officiels des Artistes Français. He returned to Brazil in 1882, exhibiting his Parisian work at Academia Imperial de Belas Artes. In 1883, he established his studio in São Paulo.
